Caregiving for Elderly
Parents or Chronically Ill Adults
Where do
you begin if you are,
or will soon be, caring for an elderly parent or a
middle-aged adult who has a chronic illness?
-
First, if you have siblings or
family members who are involved with caregiving decisions,
call a family meeting immediately,
if that is practical, and have a frank talk about your
elderly loved one’s
situation;
-
Second, if you live
out-of-town, call friends,
neighbors or family members back home and discuss
your elderly parent’s or family’s
situation with them to get their input;
-
If you are
the only relative, son or daughter, you may want to
talk with some
of your parent’s
close friends, physicians, trusted neighbors;
-
Fourth, determine,
in your discussions, if a comprehensive evaluation
is necessary. This assessment should evaluate
your elderly parent’s
physical, psychological, social, financial and environmental
needs;
-
Finally, discuss
whether you want to implement a care plan that responds
to the findings uncovered in the assessment. The care plan should address all the
in-home and out-of-home care management services including
counseling needed to ensure the highest possible care
for your elderly parent or aging family member.
Then, put
the plan into action. A licensed, credentialed
and experienced geriatric care manager can ease the
turmoil and tremendous burden of caring for an elderly
parent.
